A Course in Miracles is a course in remembering how to be what you already are! It is a course that teaches you how to be yourself. It is a manual for an awakening consciousness; a step by step experiential guide that leads you back to the beauty and grace of your true nature. The ‘mind of Christ’ is an idea that represents an experience of a whole Self – an enlightened Self – a Self that knows with absolute certainty the perfection of its own existence.
A Course in Miracles is a heartfelt plea for help in awakening the sleeping mind of God’s Son, which believes itself to be physical, vulnerable and separate in its identity. The motivation for learning this course comes from a need within you. Whether it is the pain that you feel within yourself, or the infinite insanity you see outside of you on this planet, we each have a key – one particular thing – that motivates us. Maybe it is as simple as the desire to be happy. Maybe it’s a burning question about existence itself, or a more personal question concerning your individual role in the completion of this earthly malaise. Perhaps you have come to the accurate conclusion that from within the tiny frame of self-identity in which you see yourself, there is no lasting or effectual help that you can give to release this world and your fellows from the bondage and pain that you see them in.
A Course in Miracles is not a manual for becoming more comfortable with or accustomed to life as a human being. It is not designed to make you feel happy or free WITHIN the infinitely limited bounds of separate self-identity. Its purpose is awakening: full release from the condition itself. Through this awakening process you discover your true service to the world of your own making: you discover with infinite gratitude, that only through a total change of your own mind about what you ARE, you can be of total service here.
A Course in Miracles is a book presented in three parts: a text providing a theoretical foundation for the teaching; a workbook: a practical daily application of the principles of truth, for you to utilise, by yourself in your own mind, for the purpose of awakening; and a manual for teachers of A Course in Miracles.
The book was received by an atheist psychologist in the late 1960s through a process of inner dictation. It was the result of a genuine call for help by this woman and her close work colleague. They were having problems in their work situation and they asked, together: “There must be another way.” The work that resulted from that request was eventually what landed in my hands when I made the same request.
The author of the work identifies himself as Jesus Christ. He makes references to our tragic misinterpretations of his original teachings, he teaches you, in no uncertain terms, about the nature of separate consciousness, and guides you through training your mind in the art of returning to heaven, or truth, or the reality of your true nature as perfectly present, perfectly loving, and perfectly whole. He also asks the fervent plea for our help, individually, in awakening the sleeping mind of separate self through our own focus on and dedication to the process of evolution of mind that is available to all of us at this time.
A Course in Miracles uses Christian vernacular, but is actually more like Buddhism in its fundamental teachings. Jesus was, in my mind, an early quantum scientist. When he recognised the nothingness of form, he began to manifest the ability to heal and to revive apparently physical bodies from sickness and death to perfect health and wholeness, and of course ultimately confirmed the total unreality of physical form with his own demonstrative practice of quantum reality – he rebuilt the temple of his body in three days after his physical death. The resurrection is not just a story to me – it is an ongoing experience of coming home to my quantum self. A self that is mind, not body: a mind that is aware of and identifies solely with its freedom on a cellular, on an atomic, level; a self that therefore recognises itself in everything it looks upon or can conceive. And what is you cannot be fearful, cannot cause pain, and cannot leave you. This recognition then, is what peace is.
“The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all encompassing can have no opposite. This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.”
