Be a Teacher of Life

A Course in Miracles is a course in wholeness of mind. It is an instruction manual for becoming aware that your mind is one with the Mind that created it. Thus it follows that it is a course in totality, in completeness. “The practical application of the Holy Spirit’s purpose is extremely simple, but it is unequivocal. In fact, in order to be simple it must be unequivocal. The simple is merely what is easily understood, and for this it is apparent that it must be clear.” (T:17,1)

The Course works because it only says one thing. It is total in that one thing, and it doesn’t say anything but that. Because of this, it is very simple. The only reason it seems complicated is because you don’t believe the one thing that it says. Nothing you perceive (see, hear, think, say) is true. Unless it is part of an experience that transports you to a different realm of being in which you know yourself completely. This experience is what the Course refers to as forgiveness. It has the capacity to show you beyond the possibility of doubt that this world is not true. The experience is characterised by joy. It is still not actually true.. but it is part of your coming to truth. Forgiveness is the illusion that ends all illusions. If this is your experience, it means your dream of death has become a dream of awakening, and for that you can be grateful! For that you can be grateful indeed!!

The miraculous nature of this teaching comes from the fact that it cannot be compromised if it is to be taught. A mind that is teaching A Course in Miracles does not have the ability to compromise the teaching. The clarity of the concepts is so obvious and so powerful, and if it is watered down with human thinking it becomes nothing, like everything here. It becomes just another blank perception, another invention of nothingness. It becomes dry and boring like everything in form! It becomes dead. The teaching of the concepts, whether verbally or mentally (with your whole being), is a direct transmission of life, an offering of resurrection to your brother in the wholeness of Christ. If it stirs up and regenerates an individual, if it enlightens or enlivens them, if it enlightens or enlivens you as you express yourself, then you are teaching A Course in Miracles. If nothing happens, if there is no spark of recognition, alive-ness, joy, if there is no dislodgment of human identity, if there is no change, then no teaching has occurred. You are a teacher of life or a teacher of death in each moment, and the reaction you receive, in your own self or that of another, will tell you what you are teaching.

“I have stated that the basic concepts referred to in this course are not matters of degree. Certain fundamental concepts cannot be understood in terms of opposites.” (T:3,2) The belief in levels or degrees is a belief in conflict. The understanding that the teaching is total and has no exceptions, is a belief in God.

Do you have some secret problems that you hide from the Holy Spirit’s reach? Are there some elements of your ‘life’ on earth that you believe are untouchable by His gentle hand? (Be honest! Do you want peace? Then you must be honest with yourself! You cannot be helped if you do not need help!) Are there some dark corners of your mind that you prefer to wallow in occasionally and that you believe are beyond the Mind that is everything? “There is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not ‘harder’, or ‘bigger’ than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal.” (T:1,1) If there are some areas that are beyond His help, then you are teaching the opposite of this course.

“It is impossible to conceive of light and darkness or everything and nothing as joint possibilities. There are all true or all false. It is essential that you realise your thinking will be erratic until a firm commitment to one or the other is made.” (T:3,2) In order to be whole, your thinking must be whole, and in order for your thinking to be whole you must accept the totality of the teaching. You must recognise that the thoughts you have about things do not have any meaning beyond what you give them, that the forms you see and think about are the projection of your own private thoughts, and the use that you have for them (to justify your reality as a separate form) is irrelevant to reality.

“A firm commitment to darkness or nothingness however, is impossible. No one has ever lived who has not experienced some light and some thing. No one, therefore, is able to deny truth totally, even if he thinks he can.” (T:3,2) Take comfort in this fact! You cannot deny God totally! Even if you think this is within your power, it is not, and has never been. You can not actually be separate or apart from what you are in truth. Your creation is eternal, and is occurring now. You are one with the Mind that Creates, and Creates Now! You ARE in an experience of purity, forgiveness, and release of the world of pain. You DO value the formless, the perfect, the real, beyond what you see as before you and having reality in form. You DO want the truth of yourself, you DO want peace, you DO want God. So give yourself away! Let every thought and interaction be a giving of the Love that expresses itself unconditionally and eternally through you. Let yourself be changed by the spark of enlightenment, enlivenment, that is yours to see, to give, to think about, to extend, expand, to value, to cherish and to love. Let yourself be taught by the Mind that sees everything as one. Let yourself be a teacher of God, a teacher of truth, a teacher of Life.

Master Teacher Reminds Me I Am Space

I had a beautiful experience with Master Teacher during our recent retreat in La Finca de Milagros near Benitachell in Spain. Tim played us the video ‘The Presence of God is Shining in me Now’, (workbook lesson 188 in A Course in Miracles), from Master Teacher’s ‘Illuminate Mind-Training’ Series. It is an incredibly powerful video, where the Master demonstrates clearly his own perfect certainty of universal reality and his own identity as that.

I was standing up, with my eyes closed, receiving a joyful exposure to the light of truth that Master Teacher’s mind emits. The joy is always in opening myself fully to the energy that is being transmitted by the mind that is teaching. That energy is powerfully transformative and awakens and activates my own desire to be with God, to be whole and totally immersed by and nourished in the gloriously rich and infinite expansion of His Heart and Mind.

In an instant I was given a deeper availability to join my mind with that of the Master and in that moment he was with me and he entered me physically, as in, his body stepped inside mine. I received a very gentle knowledge that we are the same thing; there is one body, one mind, only one thing actually occurring in all the apparently infinite complexity of space and time. The one thing that is occurring is mind coming home to itself, and the mind that is coming home to its Father’s grace and presence and joy is mine.

I felt the intimacy and tenderness with which the mind of Christ is offered through a whole mind in a clear declaration of its whole self, and of that one Self becoming one with me: that apparent separate body entering mine and showing me that we are the same.

In the next instant I was shown that we were out in space. I lifted my arms and swung them around a little and realised the stars were all around me! I was out in space with Master Teacher, being shown that I am him and I am space and I am the entire universe.

A short while later the video finished and we had a ‘light session’ with music – an opportunity to stand in the light with your brother and experience the joy of whole mind being itself with no distractions of the human mind. It is a time to be still and allow all the energy of the teaching session to release in a moment of genuine direct contact with your Father. Though I had opened my eyes and moved around I was still very much in the deep and very gentle super high frequency of light with the Master Teacher and as I stayed with him I believe I had my first real experiential understanding of what it is to be deeply in contact with myself.

I was deep, deep within, the world outside of me was irrelevant, though perfectly lovely and safe. Energetically it felt like I had fallen back and down, into a space just below my belly. My mind was not aware of the limits of my body identity. My physicality was shared completely with the space around me, the wall that the Son of God has built to enclose his separate self (A Course in Miracles, ‘What is the Body?’) was not in my awareness. My self is space and I was fully in contact with that reality.

The experience was one of richness and beauty and grace. The feeling of completely accepting everything that was occurring ‘out there’ in my perception lasted a couple of days. I was so deep in the safety and peace of my Father’s knowledge of me that nothing occurred around me that could upset that. My perception was whole, because my centre was so secure. I knew that I am the centre of my experience and that I am totally responsible for putting out there exactly what I want to see. And because my only desire was to experience grace, I perceived only joy. It was an experience of vision, of seeing truly, from the one true standpoint of acceptance of my whole Self; and the perception of beauty that is allowed or extended from the mind that is experiencing that state.

This experience is added to my storehouse of treasures, to the pile of bright references that give me stronger and stronger confidence in the value of the path that I am engaged in and the association that I have with my brothers who share the need that I have to be closer and ever closer to the Father of all creation.

‘I am not a body, I am free, for I am still as God create(s) me’ here and now! (Workbook lesson 199, A Course in Miracles). Thank you Master Teacher, for your deep certainty of Self that allows me to experience my own. And thank you Father, for bringing me home to you, in ongoing experiences of the safety, security and tenderness of your everlasting love.

The Chair of Infinite Universal Love

During our weekend event with Tim Christopher in London this Easter I was given a most beautiful, personal and experiential teaching about specialness.

Tim had been teaching about the chair. There were around 18 ordinary 1980s plastic moulded chairs in the room, grey ones with black metal legs, textured surface, and a rectangular hole at the place where your lower back sits. The one to his right was empty and had been used during this teaching to demonstrate the idea that any object can offer you the total recognition of yourself if you will let it; if you are open enough to release all ideas you hold of the reality of objective, self-existent form.

From lesson 29 (A Course in Miracles), ‘God is in everything I see’:

“The idea for today explains why you can see all purpose in everything. It explains why nothing is separate, by itself or in itself. And it explains why nothing you see means anything. In fact, it explains every idea we have used thus far, and all subsequent ones as well. Today’s idea is the whole basis for vision.

“…we emphasised yesterday that a table shared the purpose of the universe. And what shares the purpose of the universe shares the purpose of its Creator.

“Try then, today, to begin to learn how to look on all things with love, appreciation and open-mindedness. You do not see them now. Would you know what is in them? Nothing is as it appears to you. Its holy purpose stands beyond your little range. When vision has shown you the holiness that lights up the world, you will understand today’s idea perfectly. And you will not understand how you could ever have found it difficult.”

I left the room and re-entered it and stood for a while behind the empty moulded plastic chair. Energy was coursing through my body, and I remember opening my eyes for a moment and checking the back of the chair was close enough for me to reach out and hold onto it if I needed to. I continued to stand there with my eyes closed and enjoy the energetic effects of physical resurrection, and at one point – as a wave of energy moved through me and made me spasm forward – I reached out for support and held onto the back of the chair. In the moment that I reached out and used the chair for support, I suddenly experienced it as the whole universe of light that Tim was offering through his teaching, and that Jesus offers us in lesson 29, ‘God is in everything I see’.

Chair of Light

The support it offered me was overwhelming. In that moment, through my experience of that chair, I received a perfect energetic transmission of wholeness. I knew that I could sit in it and it would hold me, not simply with the practical support of its structure, but with the penetrating but infinitely gentle arms of God Himself. The nourishment that was available to me through my connection with that chair in that moment was the fulfilling of every need and the release of every thought. It was literally given to me as an experience of totality, as an experience of perfect comfort, perfect care, perfect gentleness, perfect support… perfect love.

In that moment, in my full awareness, the chair shared the purpose of God. God gives wholly, truly and totally. God only loves. The purpose of God was extended to me through the form of the chair. I joined totally with it and received all the love of God that I was available to in that moment. The experience explained to me that “nothing is separate, by itself or of itself” because it was a perfect joining; it taught me that “nothing I see means anything” because the separate world of objective form that my body’s eyes see has nothing whatsoever to do with this experience of immense and immeasurable joy that I was being given! The vision of Christ, the vision of wholeness, was literally showing me “the holiness that lights up the world”, and I did indeed understand perfectly, experientially, that God was and is literally in that chair. And these lessons when they are real are always infinitely transferrable – if God is in the chair then he is in the coat hanger, magazine, finger, lamp, body, door, and waste basket that Jesus suggests as a possible list of items for use in this exercise (lesson 29). If God is in the chair, then God is indeed in everything. If God is in the chair then my entire thought system of objectivity is false. If God is in the chair then attack is impossible and suffering is untrue, because if the chair doesn’t exist separately from God, then neither do I. If the chair can teach me the truth about myself as infinitely extending all the love in the universe, then so can anything and everything I look upon and thus enter into a relationship with! Amen.

I began to laugh as I realised the clarity of the teaching I was being offered through this experience – there were 16 or so other chairs in the room that were literally identical! My special chair was distinguishable only through very careful observation of minor flaws! All the chairs were exactly the same as each other! But in that instant, that chair stood out for me, perfect in its quantum offering, resplendent in its benificence, glorious in my understanding of it as extending to me all the love that my Father made me as in His Creation.

I was shown simultaneously two opposite and paradoxical teachings, both of which are perfect and are true. The first – that specialness is an illusion. The idea that one form can offer me anything that another form cannot, is ridiculous, insane and untrue. And secondly, the recognition that I should use that light, wherever I see it, wherever it appears to come from, who or whatever it appears to come through. Focus not upon the form! Utilise the light of God. Let it be extended unto you and accept it wholly. But mistake not the chair for the teacher! The teacher is in your mind and is offering you everything, through everything, all the time.

From lesson 30, ‘God is in everything I see because God is in my mind’:

“Today we are trying to use a new kind of ‘projection’. We are not attempting to get rid of what we do not like by seeing it outside. Instead, we trying to see in the world what is in our minds, and what we want to recognise is there. Thus, we are trying to join with what we see, rather than keeping it apart from us. That is the fundamental difference between vision and the way you see.”

The vision of Christ is teaching you that you are indistinguishable from the other ‘chairs’, the other forms you see around you. It is teaching you that infinite care, nourishment and fulfillment are yours to give, through your recognition of what you are. It is teaching you that to give and to receive are one in truth, for when you receive that blessing for yourself, in the recognition that you are whole, you are receiving it for everyone.

Resurrecting Body, Enlightening Mind

I am here, this Easter time, in the full and grateful recognition of the resurrection of my body and the enlightenment of my mind. These ideas are not separate or apart – the resurrection of mind is the enlightenment of the body structure – the experience of the quantum self. The body form is released entirely in the light of true vision that disperses doubt forever. And finally, finally, FINALLY – I am not wanting to receive, to get, but to give. I am finally able to accept the teaching that what I give to myself is given to my brother, and in my love for him I want only for him to experience the truth that I have been given. And here, finally, is the motivation that I needed in order to allow myself the recognition and experience of the truth.

Jesus is here with us in the process of the dissolving of the small self. He is here because when he awoke and resurrected he had nowhere else to go! His resurrection WAS his declaration that he would be here, with us, helping us in this, until it is over – until the end of time. His resurrection was his demonstration of that declaration. The two are inseparable, they are the same thing. One cannot occur without the other.

“My resurrection comes again each time I lead a brother safely to the place at which the journey ends and is forgot. I am renewed each time a brother learns there is a way from misery and pain. I am reborn each time a brother’s mind turns to the light in him and looks for me. I have forgotten no-one.” (from introduction to review 5, Lesson 171, A Course in Miracles)

My One Fundamental Need

Your one fundamental need is to know your own identity. Nothing but this will give you lasting happiness, and nothing but this will bring you real peace. But this knowledge, firmly kept within the shining awareness of your own mind, cherished and adored within your own heart, and extended to all who you meet or think of, will protect you from all thoughts of lack or of pain or of grief. And through your focus on this knowledge, and the extension of it, its perfect certainty will grow in you.

You are the light. There isn’t anything else that you could possibly offer your brother or your self, but this certain knowledge. Your light is the light of this world. It is the releasing factor, it is the power that brings rememberance of your Father’s love to all who seem to inhabit this strange place of seeming differences and separate ideas. What do you want? Do you want to know yourself as you are created, this moment, in the glorious and infinite extension of your Father’s love?

“To extend is a fundamental aspect of God which He gave to His Son. In the creation, God extended Himself to His creations and imbued them with the same loving Will to create. You have not only been fully created, but have also been created perfect. There is no emptiness in you.” (ACIM T:2:1)

It is your function to feel, to acknowledge, and to express the fullness of the experience of God. Despite your own meaningless desires to be separate! Despite any and all thoughts of death that may arise in your mind. It is your JOB to ‘pluck’ them! To notice them, to recognise them as the opposite of truth, of sanity and of love, and to declare your decision to be with your Father in truth. Where else would the work be? Where else but right here, right now, in my own mind?

My Father is completely present with me in my own mind. His creation never stops, and never sleeps. His creation IS what this eternal present IS. And there is no separation between my mind and His. There is no point where the Father stops and the Son begins – creation is continuous. Mind is continuous. There is no separation between us.

“The might of God’s teachers lies in their gentleness, for they have understood their evil thoughts came neither from God’s Son nor his Creator. Thus did they join their thoughts with Him Who is their Source. And so their will, which always was His Own, is free to be itself.” (M4:IV)

This is my fundamental need: to ‘join [my] thoughts with Him Who is [my] Source’. To be as I really am, in truth. To be ‘as God created me’, (L162 eg.) or as God creates me, right here and now, in the glorious extension of illuminate beauty and truth. There is a whole universe of beautiful light, waiting, JUST beyond the edge of the decision to have an experience of separation. And through joining my mind with this Mind of pure light that is all that is, I can be the Will of God!.. Which is my own will.. eternally creating.. eternally changing and changeless in an ever-growing dynamic expansivity that emanates throughout the entire universe!

I am mind. But I am not separate mind. I am not the mind that sees a world outside of itself – that separates itself from everything through the projection of guilt and attack. That is not what I am. And as part of learning what I am, the need is always to look upon what I am not. It is given me to look upon my ‘evil thoughts’, WITH the light of my Father’s Mind, and let Him shine them away; let Him SHOW me, through an ACTUAL EXPERIENCE of heaven – of wholeness – of light, that none of them are true. And that the mind that could conceive of separation, of bodies and of violence and of lack, CANNOT exist, if my Father does. The world that I see is NOT the representation of loving thoughts – but its total opposite. And loving thoughts exist in the mind of God – which is my mind – and I can receive them, and let them take me home to my true identity in Him. How gentle, and beautiful, that is! Thank you, Father, thank you for your reality, and thank you for the complete unreality of what I made to defy and deny you – an experience of separate mind, death, and fear, which I have propagated through the use of judgement, exclusion, rejection, and the projection of guilt and attack.

“A lesson is miracle which God offers to me, in place of thoughts I made that hurt me. What I learn of Him becomes the way I am set free. And so I choose to learn His lessons and forget my own.” (L213)

God releases you through your thoughts. The same mechanism you used to imprison yourself in a world of linear time. The miracle occurs within your mind. The miracle IS accepting God’s answer, God’s thought, in place of the one you made to imprison yourself. Your choice to BE the miracle, to be a miracle-worker, to be the gentleness of a teacher of God, to be set free.. is your decision to listen to and be with the voice of God in your own mind. It’s the decision to let all thought leave you but the one He is giving you, to comfort, heal, and bless. It is the decision to surrender entirely to the depth of the grace of His care and His love for you. It is the decision to RECEIVE His truth, so that you can naturally and with no effort whatsoever GIVE that loving knowledge of light and peace and beauty to everything that seems to exist within your mind.

So what is my one fundamental need? To know myself, as God creates me now; to know myself as wholly loving, wholly inclusive, wholly singular; to know myself as the effortless extension of the love that is the instrument as well as the symphony of creation; that is the limitless power to transform and heal the separate mind and take it home to the certainty and the peace of its own loving emancipation.
